There are two playgrounds in Waterfront Park — the original Children’s Play Area at the Orange parking lot (just west of the Harbor Lawn), and the Adventure Playground & Waterplay at the Silver lot, just east of the Big Four® Bridge.
The Children’s Play Area was one of the very first areas to be completed – it was opened to the public in 1997 and was an immediate hit. This playground was the only one planned in the original Waterfront Master Plan, but it was so popular and so heavily used that the Master Plan was revised to include the Adventure Playground in Phase II of the park.
The Children’s Play Area includes three adjacent areas for different age groups and a climbing rock in the adjacent lawn area. It has wonderful views of the river, the Great Lawn, and the downtown skyline.
The Adventure Playground/Waterplay Area was completed as part of Phase II, and it opened to the public in 2004. The playground includes large play structures that look like a steamboat and a bridge, and a climbing pyramid that offers wonderful views of the river and surrounding park. The Waterplay Area is open seasonally, generally from early May through October. It includes water cannons, spray misters, and colorful metal sculptures of fish that are elevated and spray water from their mouths.
