The Kentucky Grove is a grove of native trees planted at the base of the Big Four® Bridge. Plantings include:

Sugar Hackberry

Celtis laevigata
Commonly used as a shade tree; both handsome and tolerant of urban stresses.

Kentucky Coffeetree

Gymnocladus dioicus
Once the state tree; early settlers used its pods as a coffee substitute.

Bur Oak

Quercus macrocarpa
Named for the fringed cup around its acorn; has large, beautiful leaves and rough, gray bark.

Sourwood

Oxydendrum arboretum
Beautiful in all seasons; flowers in summer, has brilliant fall foliage.

Cucumbertree Magnolia

Magnolia acuminate
Large shade tree known for beautiful foliage and unique seed cones.

Broad-leaf evergreen with clusters of red berries in fall and winter.
